Rotogravure Printing

Rotogravure printing, also known as gravure printing, is an advanced intaglio printing technique highly valued in the packaging industry for its ability to deliver exceptional image quality and intricate details. The rotogravure process utilizes engraved cylinders to transfer ink to the substrate. Here’s an overview of how it works:

1- Design Preparation: The process begins with creating a high-resolution digital design. This design is adapted for printing, including necessary color separations to ensure accurate color reproduction.

2- Cylinder Engraving: The design is transferred onto a copper-plated cylinder using an engraving machine. This involves creating cavities or cells in the cylinder’s surface, which vary in depth and width. These cells, or “cells,” are what hold the ink. Deeper cells hold more ink and produce darker shades, while shallower cells hold less ink and produce lighter shades.

3- Ink Application: The engraved cylinder is coated with a layer of ink. Excess ink is then wiped off the surface of the cylinder, leaving ink only in the engraved cells. This process ensures that the ink remains only in the cells and not on the surface.

4- Printing Process: The cylinder is then positioned between an ink source and the substrate (the material being printed on, such as packaging). As the cylinder rotates, the ink from the cells is transferred onto the substrate. The high spots on the substrate pick up the ink from the cells, while the low spots do not, effectively transferring the design onto the packaging material.

Through this method, rotogravure printing can achieve high-quality, detailed, and consistent results, making it ideal for complex and large-scale printing projects.
